INSTITUTE OF NIGER DELTA STUDIES
INTRODUCTION
The Institute was established in June, 2011 as a research Institute to document, promote, and undertake research into various aspects of life in the Niger Delta.
VISION
The vision of the Institute is to produce research results that contribute to the enhancement of the quality of life of the peoples of the Niger Delta.
MISSION
The Institute’s Mission is to initiate and sustain quality research that will contribute to capacity building, sustainable development and peaceful co-existence in the Niger Delta.
OBJECTIVES
To undertake collaborative research into community history
• and cultural heritage in the Niger Delta.
• To undertake research into the nature and contributions of indigenous knowledge to the development process in the Niger Delta.
• To create databases for existing research results for the Niger Delta.
• To establish and develop community museums, monuments and cultural landscapes in the Niger Delta to stimulate tourism.
• To organise essay competitions for Secondary School students in the Niger Delta.
• To promote a reading culture by participating in the establishment and development of community Libraries.
THE JOURNAL OF NIGER DELTA STUDIES
The Journal of Niger Delta Studies, which was first published as a refereed Journal in 1976 with Professor G. O. M. Tasie, who was then at the University of Jos, as Editor, is being resuscitated by the Institute. It will be the Institute’s flagship publication.
SUSTAINABILITY
The Institute is supported by the University, mainly with personnel, facilities, and the administration for its research and related activities. The various Chairs are expected to attract external funding for their establishment as well as research and related activities.
THE INSTITUTE’S VISITING SCHOLAR PROGRAMME
To strengthen the Institute’s capacity to deliver on its mandate, a result-oriented visiting Scholar Programme shall be put in place.
