The centre for Conflict and Gender Studies (CCGS) partnered the  Rivers State Ministry of Women Affairs and the international community in commemorating this year's international day for the elimination of violence against women and girls. Speaking on the importance of the Day, which is marked on November 25 every year, Acting Director of CCGS, Dr Heoma Nsirim-Worlu identified violence by intimate partners as one of the most common forms of violence against women. The Acting Director also decried a situation whereby many women do not seek help or report their predicament due to fear of losing their partners or been stigmatised. Describing violence against women as a violation of human rights of women, the Acting Director called for the enactment of relevant legislation on violence against women and girls to curb the menace. “As the Centre joins the International Community in commemorating the day, we recommend behavioural change for partners. I believe this will reduce the risk of violence against women and girls. Another thing that will reduce this form of violence is the education of citizens with the enactment of relevant legislation and Act on violence against women and girls,” she stated. The CCGS Acting Director further added that respect, love and tolerance for one another would help in preventing violence.
