Vice Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill has charged the newly inaugurated Interim Executives of the University of Port Harcourt Business School (UPHBS) to initiate programmes that would advance the status of the Institution and its Alumni Affairs through effective participation.

Professor Georgewill represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Professor Clifford Ofurum gave the charge during a get-together and the official flag-off of the University of Port Harcourt Business School Alumni Association at the school premises located at Chinua Worlu Drive, off Sanni Abacha Road GRA Phase 2, Port Harcourt on Sunday, December 12, 2021.

The Vice Chancellor called on the members of the Interim Executive of the Business School Alumni to create a conducive environment that would attract member participation, stating that good communication between the Alumni Members and the University is necessary to drive massive funding that would aid the University to meet its core mandate of teaching, research, community service and entrepreneurship.

"Alumni institutional advancement focuses on supporting the university growth through their contribution, donations or both. Financial support from federal, state and local governments to universities is dwindling when much more is expected from these universities. Again, other economic and social challenges have also diminished the abilities of most universities to generate funds internally. Therefore, these universities must receive additional financial support to meet their core mandate of teaching, research, community service and entrepreneurship," the Vice Chancellor stated.

He urged the Management and stall of UPHBS to treat students with utmost respect and dignity while they are in school, stressing that poor treatment from staff members account for the low participation of Alumni members in the activities of the University.
Earlier, the Director of the University of Port Harcourt Business School, Professor Emeka Okereke in his welcome speech urged Alumni to see themselves as valuable ambassadors in their various areas of specialisations, maintaining that Alumni Associations the world over have remained a laudable voice for their alma mater and must come together to drive the vision that would move the school forward. Responding on behalf of the Alumni, the Chairman Interim Executive of the Alumni Association, Dr Chukwudi Ezegwu promised the University's Management of his Association's support to drive the programmes and activities of the school to enhance performance of corporate organisations and businesses in the country.
