National Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) Inducts 326 Lab Technologists

A total of 326 graduands of the School of Science Laboratory Technology, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, have been inducted into the National Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (NISLT) at the 3rd Induction Ceremony for the 2011/12 batch.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ajienka, made the disclosure in his address at the ceremony held last Tuesday at Ebitimi Banigo Auditorium, affirming that the graduands met all stringent conditions specified by Senate of the University for the award of the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree and Associate Membership of NISLT which qualified them for the Induction.
A breakdown of the figure of the seven options in the School showed that 34 students graduated from Biochemistry/Chemical Technology, 108 for Biomedical Technology, Geology/Mining Technology (56), Industrial Chemistry/Petrochemical Technology (46), Microbiology Technology (54), Physics with Electronics Technology (26) and Physics with Production Technology (2).
Professor Ajienka, who commended the graduands, some of who took additional step to enroll and pass out successfully in the international certification examinations conducted by the American-based National Registry of Environmental Practitioners (NREP), expressed delight with the professional bodies for collaborations aimed at producing quality graduates from the University.
“I encourage you to strive towards the ideals of diligence and excellence in service to your community, workplace and humanity. You must ensure that the best industry practices are maintained at all times in your professional practice. That way, you would have justified the huge resources expended on you by the University and your parents as you prepare to render service to mankind,” the Vice-Chancellor told the graduands, recalling that as the first Nigerian university to run the Science Laboratory Technology as a Faculty-based programme, the University would continue to give priority to the welfare of students to bring out the best in them.
In her welcome message, Provost, College of Natural and Applied Sciences, Professor Nnenna Frank-Peterside, stated that: “As you step fully into the larger world, kindly remember at all times and in all circumstances that you are an ambassador of the Unique University; you are not only a graduate in learning, but also in character. The eyes of the world are now permanently fixed on you, hoping and trusting that every step you take will culminate in giant strides on the side of positivity for your own good, that of your family, Alma Mater and Nigeria.”
Presenting the Keynote Address on “Science Laboratory Professional Ethics,” Mr Anthony Mumuni, charged the new Inductees to strictly comply with the ethics of the profession. “Duly registered members are bound by the provisions of the code of conduct, so at all times make principled choices in your decision. Dilemma may arise when ethical issues conflict with extant laws, in the event of such issues, consult colleagues, consider alternative decision by bringing your competence and responsibility to the Institute to the fore,” the Keynote Speaker advised.
Earlier, pioneer Dean of the School, Professor Anthony Ataga, had disclosed that out of the 326 graduands, 38 of them came out with Second Class (Upper Division), 263 with Lower Division, while 25 graduated with Third Class Honours degree, revealing further that 97 out of 98 of the graduands, who sat for NREP Certification passed in flying colours.
“Today, we are going to honour Mr Ima Godwin Airehua, a retiring Chief Technologists in the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry with the first SSLT Merit Award for his role in the training of Technologists, Scientists and landmark inventions of chemicals that are now widely used in the oil and gas industry,” the Dean said, praising the Management of NISLT for its support and partnership, as well as staff of the School for dedicating themselves to their job schedules.
Highlights of the Induction included the administration of Oath by Director-General/Registrar of NISLT, Dr Ighodalo Ijagbone, presentation of merit award to Mr Airehua and prizes to deserving graduands. Miss Bridget Ogwu of Microbiology Technology Option emerged the Valedictorian with a Cumulative Grade Point Average of 4.37 on a scale of five points.
