Olympic Afrique Inspect Facilities For UNIPORT Sports Institute

In view of the stated vision of establishing a first-rate Sports Institute in the University, Vice-Chancellor, Professor Joseph Ajienka, has held talks with the Executive Director of Olympic Afrique, Mr Thierno Diack, who travelled from Dakar, Senegal to the University to inspect facilities, as well as assess the status of the proposed Institute.

The two-day visit which commenced last Wednesday with presentations from the Vice-Chancellor and the Director of Sports, Dr Ken Anugweje, ended with an inspection tour of facilities last Thursday.

Speaking after the tour, Executive Director of Olympic Afrique, which is the African subsidiary of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), expressed readiness to advise international sports governing bodies on the need to replicate the Zimbabwean Model to provide first-rate facilities for the proposed Sports Institute in the University of Port Harcourt. 

Mr Diack, who was visibly impressed with the quality facilities he met on ground, however, called for the resurfacing of the track with Sandwich System, which according to him, could last more than 20 years with the added advantage of manual maintenance.

An Olympic Gold Medallist and former World Champion in Wrestling, Dr Daniel Igali, expressed willingness to sponsor the Wrestling Academy of the Institute. 

Registrar, Mrs Matilda Nnodim, Chairman, Sports Complex Management Committee, Professor Mark Anikpo, Director of University Advancement Centre, Professor Igho Joe and other officials were on hand to interact with the visiting delegation.
