NUGA 2017: We Did It Again!

Following the latest medal haul by the irrepressible Team UniPort athletes, the social media was abuzz with hilarious suggestions that the University of Port Harcourt should attend subsequent Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) in an “Observer Status”!  it is not a laughing matter. They have a strong point. How else can anybody rationally explain a situation in which Team UniPort seasonally rubbishes the combined efforts of athletes from 148 universities that compete against it for medals, only to go home empty-handed on each occasion.
For instance, in the just-concluded NUGA Games hosted by Benue State University in Makurdi, 'heartless' Team UniPort athletes mocked their colleagues from other universities who had trained day and night to secure some medals for their effort. How on planet earth can only one University brush aside all spirited opposition to cart away 70 gold, 47 silver and 33 bronze without considering the interest of other competitors? The intriguing thing is that Team UniPort set and broke its own sporting record to thunderous applause in Makurdi.
The social media claimed that it was only when Team UniPort completed its medals harvest did it allow the other teams to scramble for what was left on the Medals Table. The claim was not far from the truth, because you only have to take a closer look at the final Medals Table to appreciate the yawning gap between the all-conquering Team UniPort and the rest of the teams that competed at the Games.
ABU came a miserable second with only 11 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze; Benson Idahosa University came third with 10 gold, 7 silver and 9 bronze medals; University of Lagos took fourth position with 9 gold, 4 silver and 7 bronze medals. University of Benin came fifth with 8 gold, 8 silver and 8 bronze; University of Ilorin took sixth position with 5 gold, 14 silver and 11 bronze, while the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, could only manage 5 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals. The host university could only pick up 2 gold, 3 silver and 3 bronze medals for its effort. It simply means that all the medals won by the other universities put together could not match the UniPort medals haul! What a relentless victory and what a warning to future competitors against the golden Team UniPort?
Again, how does anybody explain a situation in which the second-placed team from ABU had to console itself with only a miserly 11 gold, 2 silver and 3 bronze? To make a bad matter rather worst, as many as fifteen universities were compelled to go home empty-handed in the 'also ran' category; no thanks to the 'insensitive' conquest by Team UniPort! As matters now stand, it is very clear that all the conspiracies to put down Team UniPort have come to naught and those other teams that consulted herbalists and prayer contractors to help them dethrone the serial conquerors are said to be demanding immediate 'refund' of their deposits.
As it stands right now, rumours are rife that some of the other vanquished teams are planning trips to Unique UniPort to learn the secret of a dominant performance that has lasted for six consecutive times. UniPort News gathered that plans are underway to give Team UniPort athletes and officials a rousing welcome at a date to be determined by the Management of the University. Oh yes! It is obvious that the fear of Team UniPort is the beginning of athletic wisdom for future NUGA competitors from other universities. Unique…UniPort!!!  Watch out for more reports on the Games.
