THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT (Monday,14th – Friday, 18th February, 2022)

1. The Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Professor Kaniye Ebeku in the company of the Dean and staff of Faculty of Law paid a courtesy visit on the University Management. The visit afforded the Management and Faculty the opportunity to discuss the possibility of mutual collaboration to improve the fortunes of the Faculty of Law and the University at large.

2. We participated in the ramp-up training/workshop organized by the School of Graduate Studies in collaboration with the Doctoral Academy of Nigeria. The workshop organized for doctoral students and senior academics afforded participants the opportunity of improved knowledge on research and thesis supervision. A Doctoral Policy Committee headed by Professor Barisua F. Nwinee, Dean, School of Graduate Studies, was set up to ascertain standards of scholarly performance and quality of doctoral degree work. 

3. We received the Board and staff of School of Basic Studies. We commended them for the improved state of the School and were urged to do better.

4. We participated in the site handover for the construction of PUTOR Building behind Emerald Energy Institute. We shall update the University Community as work progresses. 

5. We inspected the following:

i. Photometer and Borehole at the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Science Building

ii. Items supplied at the School of Basic Studies, 

iii. Working materials at Council Affairs department.

iv. Lightening at 33KVA sub-station 

v. Renovation of Animal House

vi. Purchases of sanitation materials at CEBAS

vii. Repair work done at the Delta Park Generator

viii. Interior renovation of the Ebitimi Banigo Auditorium

ix. Repainting of the Senate Building.

6. A Life-Straw Community Water Filter was donated to the Lulu Briggs Health Center, by a Canada based distinguished Alumnus, Mrs. Loretto Madunkwo. The Vice Chancellor commended the gesture of the Education graduate, noting that leveraging on the wealth of alumnus can be a potent resource for University development. We are pleased to inform the University Community that we have handed over the equipment to the Acting Director of Health Services Department for use by staff and students.

7. The Executive Committee Members of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) Rivers State branch led by its Chairman, Dr. Alikor paid a courtesy visit on the University Management. The Association congratulated the Vice Chancellor on his well-deserved appointment and discussed issues affecting her members. They also informed the Vice-Chancellor of the upcoming National AGM of the Nigeria Medical Association scheduled to hold in Port Harcourt. 

8. The Faculty of Education conducted her Deanship election. We encouraged them to conduct a free, fair and credible election. We are pleased to report that Professor Cheta Williams emerged as the new Dean, Faculty of Education. 

We would like to use this medium to call on all other contestants to work with the new Dean for the growth of the University.

9. We inspected the new site for the Counselling & Human Development Centre and commended the Acting Director, Dr. Rosemary Ekechukwu for improvement at the Centre.

10. The meeting of Tenders Board was held on Thursday, 17th February, 2022 to consider tenders and grant approvals in line with the Procurement Act. 

11. At a meeting with Principal Officers, the Faculties of Humanities and Media & Communication Studies amicably resolved that the Department of Linguistics Studies should be domiciled in the Faculty of Humanities while Communication and all its affiliates should be in the Faculty of Media and Communication Studies.

12. We had in audience, Ms. Ekaete George of the International Communication Association (ICA). She notified the University Management that the University has been selected as African Regional Hub to host the virtual 72nd International Conference of the Association. Ms. Ekaete George presented some of her books to the University. 

13. We received Router and Switches from Computer Information System Company (CISCO) in recognition of our strides in the academia. The presentation was made Dr. Daniel Ekpah of the Department of Electrical Electronics Engineering who emerged as Best in Cyber Security Programme (2019). The equipment received was handed over to the Dean, Faculty of Engineering for use in the Faculty.

14. We received HP Desktop computers and accessories for the Department of Theatre and Film Studies. The donation was made by Mr. Mike Alagoa for equipping of editing studio in the Department. We have handed over the donated computer systems to the Head of Department, Theatre and Film Studies for use in their studio.
