THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT (Monday, 28th February – 4th March, 2022)

1. We held a meeting with the Management team of the Petroleum Training Institute (PTI) Effurun, Delta State to reaffirm our decision to discontinue the existing partnership in line with the National Universities Commission (NUC) and Council for the Regulation of Engineering (COREN) on programmes in Engineering.

 

2. We received representatives of the Yoruba Community in the University of Port Harcourt on Thursday 3rd March, 2022. We had fruitful discussions and we reassured them of our commitment to an all-inclusive administration.

 

3. We participated in the annual Inter-house Sports activity of UPWA Group of Schools. The event had in display an array of sporting activities necessary for physical and health development of the pupils and students.

 

4. We received the good news that Dr. Obari Gomba of the Department of English Studies won the Pan-African Writers Association (PAWA) Poetry Prize and emerged as Africa’s Best English Poet. We congratulated him on his scholarly feat and will want to use the opportunity to urge all staff to work harder to increase the visibility of our dear Institution.

 

5. The Annual Giving programme of the University was held on Friday, 4th March 2022. Attendees were drawn from friends of the University, private interest, host communities, alumnus, staff and students. The event emphasized the need to give back to the University so as to sustain it's founding ideals.

 

6. We received the Association of Specialist Medical Doctors in Academia (ASMEDIA) and had fruitful discussions on areas of mutual interest. 

 

7. We also received the Director and staff of the Centre for Gender Studies on a courtesy visit and had fruitful discussions in the interest of the University. Subsequently, we constituted a Gender Policy Committee headed by Prof. Heoma Nsirim-Worlu to ensure that we maintain the United Nations Gender Framework (UNGF).

 

8. The Seventh Day Adventist Church, Choba District visited the University. We had discussions on areas of concern and thereafter, prayers were offered for the Institution.

 

9. We reconstituted membership of the Anti-Corruption Transparency Unit. The new Committee is to be headed by Prof. Samuel Arokoyu to provide information to Management with respect to compliance with the prohibitions covering behaviors that bear on corrupt practices as contained in the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.
