THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT (Monday 2nd – Friday 6th May, 2022)

1. We were in Yenegoa, Bayelsa State to participate in the U & C Micro Finance Bank Retreat for Board members. The retreat was very successful and we are hopeful of a more digitalized banking as soon as possible.
2. We inspected the ongoing construction of the new Convocation Arena and we are glad to report that the project is already giving the University Campus a face-lift. We are hopeful that it will be completed and handed over in the shortest possible time.
3. Similarly, we took a tour on the wet & dry modular laboratory of the NLNG/Uniport Centre for Gas Refinery at the Industrial Park of the University. Other inspections carried out were:
a. Inspection of furniture supplied to the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences under the NEEDs Assessment Project.
b. Inspection of installed auditorium chairs in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
4. We met with Bar. Udeme Ekrikpo, the Chief Executive of Phoenix Eue on construction of hostel facility for two thousand (2,000) bed spaces for the School of Basic Studies. We shall update the University Community on progress of the proposed project.
5. We accompanied the Chief External Examiner of JAMB – Professor Emeritus Nimi D. Briggs to our CBT centres on assessment of our readiness to conduct JAMB in the University Centers. We are pleased to report that we kicking off with the examination that begins on the 6th of May, 2022.
6. Principal Officers of the University held a Management meeting to consider issues bothering on the University such as:
a. Consideration of writers in residence
b. Electricity consumption on campus
c. CEBAS and issues of the environment
d. Basic Studies
e. State of the University in this challenging time (industrial action).
While we await a favourable outcome of the industrial action embarked upon by the various unions of federal universities, we encourage us all to stay strong.
