THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT ( Monday 27th – Friday 31st March, 2023 )

*THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT*

_The following events took place in the University from Monday, 27th – Friday, 31st March, 2023_

1.  The University Senate held its 471st meeting to approve outstanding Degree results of Full-Time, Part-Time and Sandwich students. The Vice Chancellor directed that approval of results be accorded the urgency it deserves while re-emphasizing that students’ welfare is the core of this Administration.

2.   As part of her Social Corporate Responsibility, the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC)  built students’ hostel  for the University. This project has been commissioned and handed over to the University. We commended the NPDC for this laudable gesture and solicit for more  interventions from well-meaning corporate organizations and individuals.

3.   In recognition of our contributions to the Hospitality and Tourism sector through our educational strides, the Chartered Institute of Hospitality and Management of America, conferred on the Vice Chancellor a Doctorate fellow of the Institute (Doctorate Fellow, Certified Institute of Hospitality Tourism and Management).

4.  In our strive to attain greater heights in research and development, and to place the University on the global map, we recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Management of Topline Limited for the establishment of a Professorial Chair in Pipeline research. The endowment of Ten Million Naira (N10,000,000) per annum is intended to galvanize research findings that will improve the oil industry and be beneficial to the Topline Limited and the University.

5.  We played host to  GIABA, an organization set up for the re-orientation of youths across the ECOWAS sub-region on Terrorism Financing and the involvement of youths in acts of terrorism due to financial inducements/rewards. The organization hosted a one-day sensitization for students and youths in the South-South region on the consequences of terrorism here in the University.

6.  We commended the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) for her intervention in asphalting the ever busy School of Graduate Studies link road. The hitherto dilapidated road now wears an improved look. We are hopeful that the Agency will assist in the rehabilitation of the NDDC hostel link road.

7. At the Research Fair organized by the University’s ACE-PUTOR, we had on display several ground breaking research results which bears great hallmark in addressing perennial challenges confronting the Niger Delta Region in the area of oil pollution and health challenges. The Centre in collaboration with the University intends to get patents for some of these groundbreaking researches.

8.  The University Management in company of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Governing Council undertook a tour on the state of our internal roads and hostels in preparation for the visit of the NDDC MD/CEO, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku who is a worthy alumnus of the University.

9.  We participated in the annual inter-house sports competition of the University Demonstration Primary School. The colourful event which took place at the main bowl of the University Sports Complex had on display sights of brilliance and potential. The University Management commended the School administrators for always raising the bar in her quest for the cognitive and psychomotor domains of the child.

10.   We undertook an on-site inspection of the ongoing construction of the new Convocation Arena. We are happy to report that work is currently at advanced stages and we are hopeful of its completion and hand-over soonest.

11. We received in courtesy, a Federal Commissioner with the National Population Commission (NPC) Dr. Harilu Bala Jikan-Daudu and had fruitful discussions.

12.   We participated in the 3rd Lecture series and playlet in honour of retired Prof. (Mrs.) Ayabaemi Ibiteme Spiff on the occasion of her 80th birthday. The lecture theme "What on Earth is not Chemistry" espoused the importance of Chemistry which is  the area of specialty of the celebrant.

13.  We were on ground to receive officials from the Rivers State Ministry of Education who were on inspection visit to UPWA Secondary School.

14.   In preparation for the one day working visit of the NDDC MD/CEO to the University, we played host to the Project Team of the MD/CEO of the Commission.

15. We inspected the newly renovated and furnished office of the IPTTO and commended the ACE-CEFOR for such an institutional support.
