THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT ( Monday 4th – Friday 8th March, 2024 )

_The following events took place in the University from Monday 4th, - Friday 8th, March, 2024._

1) We participated at the Year One Orientation Exercise organized by the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Health Sciences to guide the newly admitted students through the extant rules and regulations of that will govern their activities as students in the University, College and Faculty. The orientation exercise had resource persons from the University and Faculty give professional, academic and administrative pep talks to the students.

2) The University of Port Harcourt felicitates with all Women on the occasion of the International Women's Day. We joined the President of the University of Port Harcourt Women Association (UPWA), Prof. Udeme Owunari Georgewill at the UPWA International Women's Day Conference and Outreach Program. The conference "Self Investment: The Hard Conversation" advocated prudent financial planning/management and self discovery paths.

3) The University Management held a friendly conversation with the Executive Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Uniport branch to deliberate on some issues the Union had brought before the attention of the University Management. At the meeting, we arrived at some amicable resolutions. 

4) The University of Port Harcourt serves as the Central Coordinating Centre for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Abraham Georgewill is the the Chief External Examiner for JAMB in Rivers State. To this effect, we deployed some members of staff from selected tertiary institutions in the State to participate as Proctors at 2024 UTME Mock Examination and the CBT Police recruitment exercise. We undertook supervisory functions across some CBT Centres and made some notable observations to improve the UTME exercise slated for April 2024.

5) As critical stakeholders of the University, we held a meeting with the Provost, Deans and Heads of Departments to update them on the status of the current employment exercise and to make informed decisions based on the summary of the applications. As with the extant laws guiding the recruitment of academics, the applications shall be forwarded to the College/Faculties/Departments for further action. 

6. We are glad to inform the university community that our dear University of Port Harcourt was selected to benefit from the Tertiary Institutions Digital Centre Project of the Federal Government of Nigeria. We are grateful for the Federal Government for this thoughtful intervention. 

7. Graduates/Alumni of the University of Port Harcourt Business School, presented “CUTTING EDGE UNIVERSITY ADMINSTRATOR AWARD” to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari A. Georgewill in recognition of our commitment and support to the school.
