THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT ( Monday 15th – Friday 19th April, 2024 )

*THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT.*

_The following events took place in the University from Monday 15th, - Friday 19th, April, 2024._

1. The 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination has commenced across various CBT centres  nationwide. As Chief External Examiner for Rivers State, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari A. Georgewill paid unscheduled visits to some centres to assess the conduct of the examination. He commended the CBT centres and team of invigilators especially the proctors for ensuring the smooth running of the  2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination organized by regulatory body – Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB)

2. We are excited to announce that the Mercy Blessed Campus Tour, a campus gospel outreach programme by Minister Mercy Chinwo and Pastor Blessed awarded scholarship to 50 of our students. We are grateful for such a benevolence.

3. The Faculty of Law hosted her lecture series on _Imperatives in speedy and expedient dispensation of Justice, the role of front loading of evidence: a Jurist perspective" and "proper judicial approach to the interpretation and application of some salient provisions of the administration of criminal justice act and or law"._
The lecture which was delivered by the eminent Jurist in residence and visiting scholar in Uniport, Hon. Justice Biobele Abraham Georgewill, JCA, had in attendance, staff, students of Law Faculty and other eminent dignitaries. We commended his Lordship for sharing from his wealth of experience and for the excellent presentation of the Lecture.

4. As part of activities marking the celebration of the Servicom week, we were decorated by the National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer of Servicom by conferring on the Vice-Chancellor -  *Servicom Vice-Chancellor Award* in recognition of the high premium we place on service delivery at the University of Port Harcourt. The Chief Executive Officer of Servicom, Mrs. Nnenna Akajemeli was accompanied by other officials of the Commission.

5. As a way of expressing our commitment to staff welfare and to alleviate the dearth of staff quarters in the University. The Georgewill Legacy Project Phase II was commissioned.  We wish to use this medium to appeal to other individuals and well meaning organizations to  partner the University in improving the infrastructural state of the University.

6. Despite our very busy schedules and  day to day administration  of the University, the Vice-Chancellor had a Pharmacology class session with MBBS Year 4 students  to fulfill the core mandate of our employment being teaching and research. 

7.  We participated in the 12th Induction Ceremony of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The Induction  Oath  was administered by the Registrar, Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN), Pharm Ibrahim B. Ahmed and thereafter, we charged the new inductees to keep to the tenets of the Profession.

8. In line with the waiver granted by the Federal Government of Nigeria, we conducted oral interviews for shortlisted candidates. The Minister of Education Professor Tahir Mamman was represented while the commissioner in charge of Rivers State in the Federal Character Commission was also present.

9. The new career structure in the University of Port Harcourt was designed to ensure career progression by staff of the University. Staff who are duly qualified with relevant experience on the job were interviewed for elevation to their next position. Staff from Works, Physical planning, health services, legal and primary school of the University who applied were interviewed. Staff welfare is key.
