*THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT*
_The following events took place in the University from Monday 22nd, - Friday 26th, April, 2024._
1. The 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination which commenced across various CBT centres nationwide last week, has recorded large success. As Chief External Examiner for Rivers State, we took a tour to several centres across the state where notes were taken to form our report to the Board.
2. Alumni associations globally are identified as critical development partners by giving back to their alma mater. At the 2024 National Convention of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, the Vice-Chancellor as a guest Lecturer underscored the role of networking, fundraising, philanthropy, curriculum development and mentorship as critical areas of partnerships wherein alumni associations can contribute to the status of their alma mater. The Alumni body in recognition of our contributions to the reshaping of University education presented us with an award.
3. We honoured the invitation of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Port Harcourt District where they hosted members and friends of the Institute to an award and gala night. The National President of the Institute commended the Department of Accounting, University of Port Harcourt for winning the maiden Inter-University ICAN quiz competition. We were presented with an award of excellence by the Institute.
4. In recognizing that staff development is key and in line with the mandate of the University to assume the status of an entrepreneurial University and in collaboration with the University of Port Harcourt World Bank Centre of Excellence (ACE-CEFOR), we organized an innovation and entrepreneurship workshop for staff.
5. The 29th Valedictory Lecture of the University was delivered by Prof. Gloria U. Obuzor of the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry, Faculty of Science. Our distinguished retiring professor chronicled her academic sojourn and her contributions to knowledge in the University. We wished her well in retirement and commended her golden strides in the University.
6. As part of our zero tolerance for staff/students misconduct, the University Management has constituted a panel to investigate the viral video of a Lecturer alleged to have sexually assaulted a female student. The Panel is expected to submit her report in one week to enable the University Management take further actions.
7. The National Festival Competition hosted for Theatre Arts students in Nigeria universities, had the University of Port Harcourt Theatre Arts students emerging as overall winners of the competition. The Head of Department of Theatre Arts and the contingents to the competition presented the their award to the University Management.
8. At the 187th Inaugural Lecture of the University delivered by Prof. Chineze M. Uche, the Inaugural Lecturer challenged universities administrators to be innovative and entrepreneurial in managing higher education as an enterprise if they must remain globally competitive.
9. We participated at the workshop organized by the Office of the Accountant General. The Stakeholders Interactive/Sensitization Session on the Revised Policy on Revised Policy on Cash Management and Bottom-Up Cash Planning for Chief Executives of Federal Agencies/Ministries/Parastatals.
10. We held a meeting with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Didi Nimi Walson Jack on the sidelines of the Stakeholders interactive session organized by the OAGF and discussed some matters of importance to the University.
11. In celebration of the World Intellectual Property Day 2024, the University IPPTO organized a workshop to sensitize staff and students on the importance of intellectual property rights and issues.
12. We joined the Department of Paediatrics in the celebration of the life and times of late Prof. (Alabo) Raphael S. Oruamabo. The day of tributes had family, staff of the college, mentees and friends converge to pay glowing tributes to the illustrious academic and medical giant.
13. We received a team from Tetfund with the mandate of verifying disused and damaged laboratory equipment for documentation.
14. The 480th meeting of Senate was held to consider and approve relevant academic matters.
