THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT ( Monday 20th – Friday 24th May, 2024 )

*THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT.*

_The following events took place in the University from Monday 20th - Friday 24th May, 2024._

1. The Management, Staff and Students of the University of Port Harcourt, received with excitement, news of the constitution of University Governing Council, by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Education. 

Prof. Peter Okebukola was appointed Chairman/Pro-Chancellor and we are hopeful that all appointed external council members would bring in their wealth of experience and network for a greater University of Port Harcourt.

2. We participated in the orientation programme of newly admitted post graduate students of the School of Graduate Studies, University of Port Harcourt and made known to the students our institutional, academic and general guidelines.

3. In line with the global shift from certificate to *Certificate and Skills*, we received the top management team of an I.T based company, Compass UOL, led by Mr. Celso Dos Santos Silva from Brazil. We had fruitful deliberations and we are glad inform the University Community that we are at advanced stages of signing a Memorandum of Understanding with the company to provide AWS certification courses to enhance the employability of our graduates. Students from the faculties of Computing, Engineering, Science Laboratory Technology and Medical Sciences will benefit from the partnership.

4. We are glad to announce that Prof. Chinyelu Ojukwu of the Department of English Studies, has commenced a Visiting Professorship role at the University of Houston, Texas, USA. This is highly commendable.

5. We received a delegation from the Association of African Universities and the National Universities Commission to conduct a documentary on the impact of our African Centres of Excellence. The high-powered delegation was led by Yvonne Orekyeh. My

6. Also, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), Port Harcourt District paid a courtesy visit on the University Management to present their star prize award at the just concluded 2024 Tertiary Institution Quiz. 

7. As a sign of an appreciable gesture towards our leadership posture, we received a well-crafted portrait from Mary Effiong, an M.Sc student of the Ignatius Ajuru University. 

8. Knowledge is universal, hence, universities leverage on exchange and linkage programmes to build institutions and programme contents. We received a delegation from the Bayero University, Kano to understudy the operations of the University of Port Harcourt ACE-PUTOR and CEFOR. The team was led by the Director, Centre for Dryland Agriculture, Dr. Murtala Badamasi.

9. We held a crucial meeting with the Provost and Deans to ensure the timely release of Semester Results. 

10. As a measure to ensure conference attendance by beneficiaries of TetFund sponsored conferences, we held a meeting with benefitting staff who are yet to retire funds disbursed for TETFund conferences. The Director and Assistant Director of Academic Planning Unit were in attendance. We hereby use this medium to urge staff who applied for sponsorship for workshop, conferences and training to endeavor to attend such conferences . 

11. At the CBN Auditorium today Friday, 24th May, 2024, Twenty students across various departments/faculties were awarded scholarship by our strategic partners who are based in Australia – Dr. Olateju & Mrs. Olubukola Jinadu. We commended our worthy alumnus and his dear wife who thought it wise to give back to their alma-mata and call on other philanthropist to help deliver SDG4.

12. We received Team Uniport that won the star prize at the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) Energy Challenge. Team Uniport led by Udeolisa Augustine defeated four other tertiary institutions to emerge winners. We are proud of you them.

13. We participated in the Ph.D proposal defence of the Centre for Disaster Risk Management and Developmental Studies. We commended the Director, lecturers and non-teaching staff of the Centre

14. The Management of the University met to comply othe Supreme Court Judgement in favor of a post graduate student who went to court to seek the redress on issues concerning his M.Sc. Degree Certificate. We wish to use this medium to urge all members of staff to be prompt, effective and accurate in communicating with students, staff and stakeholders on issues that concern them.
