“To the best of my knowledge, it is the first Petroleum Geosciences Centre in Africa. We have similar centres in France under IFP. We also have in Malaysia, Venezuela, United Kingdom, as well as the United States”, he disclosed.

Professor Odigi, who is also the Occupant of the O.B. Lulu- Briggs’ Professorial Chair in Petroleum Geosciences, said that the Centre would have a multidisciplinary pool of Consultants and experts in Nigeria and abroad with many years of experience in oil field operations, research and consultancy, noting that with such high calibre manpower, the Centre would deliver professional and high quality services to the Industry in Nigeria and beyond.

“Now that the Centre is commencing academic activities, the oil and gas industry in Nigeria will be in a position to fulfil the local content policy of the Federal Government”, he stated, adding that we have world–class infrastructure such as Computer Work Station, as well as teaching facilities such as Geochemical, Sedimentological and Geophysical Laboratories to deliver on our promise.

Professor Odigi, who said that the Programme which has links with international oil companies is made up of 60% teaching  staff from the Industry and institutions abroad such as University of Texas and IFP School, France, has a broad perspective which is not just tied to a particular company. “The University has directed that the Centre should not be tied to a particular industry. It is an Oil Industry-wide Centre, which implies that we are drawing from MONI PULO and seeking support from other companies like Shell, Total, EXXON MOBILE, Chevron, NNPC Research and Development amongst others.

The pioneer Director disclosed that the MacArthur Foundation of Chicago, has given a grant to the Centre to take care of staff training, Workshops and Conferences, field trips, research, Visiting Professors from partnering Institutions, who would contribute lectures and participate in collaborative research.
