THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT ( Monday 5th – Friday 9th June, 2023 )

THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT

The following events took place in the University from Monday 5th - Friday 9th June, 2023.

1. The University received His Excellency, Sir, Amaopu Siminialayi Fubara, DSSR, the Executive Governor of Rivers State, who was on a working visit for on-the-spot assessment of the ongoing construction of the new Convocation Arena which commenced under the administration of the former governor Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike. He was satisfied with the quality of work however, he urged the contractors to ensure timely completion of the project. 

2. As part of the Nigeria delegation to Geneva, Switzerland, the Vice Chancellor participated in the World ICT Conference which held on 30th -31st May, 2023.

3. As part of activities to celebrate World Environment Day, the Association for Environmental Impact Assessment of Nigeria (AEIAN) in collaboration with the Institute of Natural Resources, Environment and Sustainable Development (INRES) and the Department of Animal and Environmental Biology held a lecture  with highlight on how to convert plastic waste to bioresources. The event was colorful with exhibition, competitions and award. 

4. A youth body under the auspices of the Nigeria Youth Advocacy for Good Governance Initiative (NYAGGI) conferred an award of Golden Role Model on the Vice Chancellor in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the society.

5.  We participated in the induction of  newly admitted students into the School of Public Health and charged them to be driven by academic excellence making use of the world class resources available in the University.

6. As part of our resolve to celebrate academic feats and achievements, we received the winner of the 2023 World Environmental Day Essay Competition.  Mr Uwem a student of the University in the company of his mother to receive a  prized award  from the University Management. 

7.  We paid an unscheduled visit to lecture halls as part of quality assurance and quality control policy In monitoring teaching and learning. We would like to use this medium to encourage all staff to be punctual in the discharge of duties. 

8. The 2023 Annual Conference of the Journalism Educators Foundation was held at the University of Port Harcourt. We received in audience some executive members of the Association and thereafter declared the conference open. The Conference themed "Communication, Accountability and Socio-Economic Recovery in Developing Nations, interrogated contemporary issues on communication and its impact on development. The Conference was hosted by the newly established Faculty of Communication and Media Studies.

9. At the 473rd meeting of the University Senate, approvals were granted to submissions from faculties with respect to outstanding degree results. Senate also considered and approved semester results amongst others. 

10. We met with some officials  of the Federal Road Safety Corps Zone and had robust discussions on areas of mutual partnership and benefits.

11. We participated in the biennial special congress of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Port Harcourt chapter. The special congress which is held once in two years affords the Union opportunity to elect leaders to pilot her affairs for the next two years. The election was rancor free and highly commended. 

12. As part of our primacy on skills and not just education, the Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) Unit in collaboration with the ITF Zonal Centre, Port Harcourt, organized  an orientation workshop for students. The resource persons charged the students to embrace the varied skills and industrial experiences that the programme is intended for.

13. In line with our vision to attract, complete and hand-over facilities to the benefiting faculties/department/units, we undertook a hand-over of the newly completed Department of Sociology to the Ag. Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences. The newly TETFund sponsored building will in no small measure address the challenge of office space in the Faculty and Sociology Department in particular.

14. The University Senate held it's 15th valedictory session in honour of her retiring professors namely:
a. Professor Virginia Chinwe Onumajuru
b. Professor Willie Jeremiah Okowa
c. Professor Tamunopriye Jones Agiobenebo
d. Professor Kenneth Chimbuoyim Anugweje
e. Professor Franklin Odua Chukwuma
f. Professor Christine Adaobi Nwuche
g. Professor Anthony Chukeubuihe Agumagu
h. Professor Arthur Chukwubuike Onwuchekwa 

We paid tributes to them in honor of their academic contributions and length of years in the service to the University. We wish them good health and longevity. 

15. The Committee of Provost and Deans (CPD) at its emergency meeting considered and approved the abridged academic calendar for Law students.

16. We attended the 9th Nigeria Institute of Food Science and Technology (NIFST) and the South-East Regional Food Submit (REFOST) organized by NIFST and the University of Port Harcourt Faculty of Agriculture. The theme "Positioning Local Food Materials for Industrialization, Sustainable and Global Competitiveness" was apt and resourceful.

17. The Department of Early Childhood and Primary Education conferred on the Vice Chancellor and award of honour in recognition of his contribution to Education.

18. The Leadership of the Nigeria Institute of Science Laboratory Technologists (NISLT) Uniport Chapter led by Dr. Henrietta Ogadinma paid a courtesy visit to the University Management and we had fruitful discussions.

19. We inspected the renovation work carried out on the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences building  and the roofing work at the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences 

20.  We held interviews for the positon of Deputy Director in the Department of Physical Planning and Development.
