Encourage Your Wards In Sports, V-C, BoG Charge Parents By Mercy Adeniji

Parents and Guardians have been advised to encourage their wards to participate in sporting activities to enable them develop their physical and mental capabilities aimed at complementing their academic pursuits.

Declaring open the 20th Annual Inter-House Sports of the University Demonstration Secondary School (UDSS), Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Regina Ogali, who stood in for the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ndowa Lale, congratulated the School for keeping the Inter-House Sports tradition alive.

“I also wish to commend the students for their enthusiasm and spirit of friendship and fairness. Let me assure staff and students of UDSS that the Management of the University would continue to support the School in the promotion of sporting and academic activities. There is ample evidence to prove that students who engage in sporting activities are better disposed to excelling in their academic pursuits and it is my hope that you would continue to keep sporting tradition alive in this School,” Professor Ogali charged them.

In his welcome address, Chairman of the UDSS Board of Governors and Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, Professor Barisua Nwinee, congratulated the School for organising the fiesta. “Since 2011, the School has not organised a sports meet; so there was a need to do so this year. I insisted that the event must hold because we know the value of sports in building the whole human being, and as young men and women, growing up, the students need to channel their abundant energy to productive activities through sporting activities. The other reason is that we can discover hidden talents from this competition. That is why we continue to appeal to parents to encourage their wards to participate in sporting activities,” the BoG Chairman told the gathering.

In his own address, Principal, Mr. Fidelis Weleria, congratulated the students and commended their parents for enrolling their wards in the School, which he said had written its name in gold in sports and academics. “Sports is one of the three domains recognised by educationists which acts as a medium for unity and talent hunt, since the physical body and mind of children are developed during sporting activities,” he said.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Parent-Teacher Association, Dr. Gospel Kpee, described UDSS as the best Secondary School in Rivers State both in academic and sporting activities. “The School has always taken first position in whatever endeavour it engages in and we are proud of such accomplishments. I urge parents to support their children to participate in sports to develop their mental and physical capabilities,” the PTA Chairman said.

At the end of a keenly-contested event, Green House emerged overall winners, Purple House came second, Blue House came third, Red House came fourth, Yellow House took fifth position, while White House came sixth.
