NANS Zone B Ends Leadership Summit in UniPort

The National Association of Nigerian students (NANS) ZONE B has ended a one-day Students' Leadership Summit tagged, “Education: The Pathway to Redefining Leadership” which held on Tuesday, May 25, 2021 at the Institute of Petroleum Studies Auditorium, University Park. Keynote speaker and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Honourable Timipre Sylva, expressed delight at the student body for putting together the Summit to address issues of leadership given their position as future leaders of the country. “It is the youths of today that would create the great country that we seek. If you do not prepare yourselves for leadership tomorrow, then the country is in trouble because the quality of leadership you get tomorrow is proportionate to the quality of education today,” he stressed. Stressing the importance of the Summit, Sylva commended the Management of the University for supporting the welfare of the students while promising his support to the Zone. “Nigeria has come a long way but responsibility is key to the progress of this country. So as youths, you must take responsibility seriously because the future of the country is in your hands” he remarked, recalling his days as an undergraduate student in the University and the laudable achievements over the years. Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Steve Okodudu who described the Summit as a foundation for nation building, expressed optimism that it would pave way for responsible student unionism in Nigeria. “Students must have a voice as critical stakeholders. It is time to harp on our collective responsibilities as students. We need to have the right character and integrity for nation building because nation building is a dynamic process and a collective effort,” the Acting Vice Chancellor noted. In their separate addresses, NANS National President, Sunday Asefon, Coordinator of NANS ZONE B, SouthSouth and South-East, Etinyene Offongekpe commended the Management of the University for the opportunity to host the Summit in the University. The duo observed that the need to create a blue print for a better future as well as re-orientate the student leadership at the zonal level necessitated the Summit. The event featured a presentation by the Executive Director, Enforcement and Recovery, Akwa Ibom State Internal Revenue Service, Mr Leo Umana and the Induction of Honourable Sylva and Professor Okodudu into the NANS Hall of Fame.
