Resident Doctors Pledge Emergency Medi-Care for Uniport Students

The Association of Resident Doctors, University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital Chapter (UPTH), has pledged to promptly respond to cases of emergency affecting students of the University of Port Harcourt. The Doctors made the pledge when the newly elected executives paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor. Stating the reason for the visit, the president of the group, Dr Ibe Onuah, bemoaned the recent death of some students at the UPTH due to alleged lack of emergency care.
The president, who also used the opportunity to plead for exchange programmes for members of the association, further lamented the lack of a guaranteed placement for medical students of Uniport for Housemanship at the UPTH. He said: “many of our students graduating from Uniport are denied placement for housemanship in UPTH. This has been a sad trend, we plead with the university
management to do something about it.”
Responding, the Vice Chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Research & Development, Professor Iyeopu Siminialayi, congratulated the visiting team on their recent election and described their promise for speedy response to emergency cases regarding students of the university as a "welcome development". While urging the team to make phone numbers available for Doctors at O.B. Lulu Briggs for emergency communication, he encouraged them to be worthy ambassadors of the association.
On the challenges of placement for housemanship and request for exchange programmes, the Vice Chancellor promised to take a holistic look at the various requests. He however informed them that 30% of spaces are reserved for students of the University of Port Harcourt.
