Awards/Achievements

Academic Excellence
The Faculty has maintained above average position according to NUC rating. Our graduates have consistently demonstrated superior performance in all spheres of human endeavour. The faculty for two consecutive years took first and second position in the National MBA Project Evaluation Competition organized by the Centre for Management Development (CMD).
Furthermore, the Faculty is a Centre of Excellence in the study of Business Ethics and Indigenous Entrepreneurship development in Nigeria.
The New Faculty Building
From its establishment, the Faculty had been at the temporary site, sharing a building with Faculty of Engineering. In 2009, the Faculty relocated to its building complex in the permanent site.
PhD, MBA, M.Sc. Programmes
The four functional areas have started running PhD and M.Sc. programmes. Departments of Management and Marketing have graduated PhDs while Accounting and Finance/Banking will soon produce theirs. The M.Sc. programmes in all the departments will get their first graduates in 2011.
Expansion of the Faculty
In order to meet the growing needs of other areas of specialty in business which are not sufficiently covered by the existing functional areas, the faculty has expanded its programmes to include Hospitality Management and Tourism, with its building complex completed. Also, the Department of Entrepreneurship is about to be approved for the Faculty and the work on the academic content is at its final stage in the Senate Committee on Academic Programmes and Policies (SCAPP). The faculty also runs a linkage programme with Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (ACIB/B.SC. Linkage Programme) leading to award of B.sc. degree in Financial Banking.
Entrepreneurship Centre
Following the directive of the Federal Government that Entrepreneurship Education be introduced in University Curriculum for all students irrespective of course of study, the Faculty of Management Sciences now teaches this course in all the departments of the University of Port Harcourt.
In line with the above directive, the Faculty now has a functional Entrepreneurship Centre, housed in a befitting building complex and headed by the director.
Organizing the First International Entrepreneurship Conference
In a bid to take the task of imparting entrepreneurial knowledge/skills beyond the boundaries of the University, the Faculty in 2008 organized the first international conference on Entrepreneurship in Port Harcourt that attracted dignitaries from business and industry, seasoned academics and students.
Merit Awards
Besides promotions, a number of dedicated staff who are committed to expansion of the frontiers of knowledge through research and publications, have received several merit awards in their respective fields, both locally and internationally. The following awards among others have been recorded:

  • Prof. S. E. Kalu was awarded Fellow, National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (FNIMN) in 2006
  • Dr. E. J. Okereke was awarded Academic Noble International Award by Institute of Industrial Administration of Nigeria (2008) and the International Academy of Business and Public Administration Research Award, U.S.A. (2010)
  • Mrs. Rose Adebajo – Two (2) Research Awards from International Academy of Business and Public Administration Disciplines U.S.A. in 2010.
  • Prof. Don M. Baridam in 2008 bagged Fellow Academy of Management (FAM) from Nigeria Academy of Management.
  • Ozuru, Henry N: His article on “E-Procurement and Marketing Performance in Corporate Organizations in Nigeria” won the Best Paper Award in 2009 organized by International Academy of African Business and Development (IAABD)
