BRIEF PROFILE                                               

Ijeoma Vincent-Akpu is an Associate Professor of Ecotoxicology and Hydrobiology in the Department of Animal and Environmental Biology, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria with expertise in Ecotoxicology; Environmental Impact Assessment and Ecosystem Valuation; and Coastal Resources Management. She has over 20 years of extensive investigations on fates and effects of pollutants in Niger Delta wetland of Nigeria and Cape Coast of Ghana. She has conducted several trainings for different Non-Governmental Organizations and over twenty oil impacted communities in Niger Delta on Environmental Impact Assessment and other environmental issues. She executed the projects on Intervention Framework for Mainstreaming Environmental Rights for Sustainable Livelihood and Development in the Niger Delta; and led the Environment team on Integrated Environmental, Health, Human Right and Gender (EHRG) baseline study of Ogoni clean up in Niger Delta amongst others. She is a Technical Advisor on environment for Center for Environment, Human Right and Development (CEHRD), and has served as expert in review of draft Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) reports of many projects for Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria.

 

She volunteers to capacity building and training of local communities in Nigeria on alternative skills to improve their livelihood; and facilitates two community based groups in Niger delta. She is actively involved in teaching and mentoring at the university and other national and international programs. She is an active member of several local and international professional bodies such as Co-Chair of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Section of International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA), Secretary of Association for Environmental Impact Assessment of Nigeria (AEIAN), British Ecological Society, Zoological Society of Nigeria, Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography, Fisheries Society of Nigeria, amongst others.

 

Ijeoma has received several academic awards and grants, such as: Federal Government of Nigeria Scholarship (1983–1988; & 2004); Commonwealth Fellowship (2012); Netherlands Fellowship (2013); International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Fellowships (2014); SHARE-ACP Mobility Scheme (2015); TechWomen Program (2017), CV Raman Fellowship (2018) and National Research Fund Grant (2020). She was African representative to the World Conference on Indigenous people (Aashukan) in Waskaganish, Quebec in 2017. She has over 70 research publications, technical papers, several books and book chapters and had made several presentations on her works to professional audiences in Ghana, Uganda, Mexico, Germany, France, Switzerland, South Africa, United Kingdom, Portugal, Tunisia, Italy, India, and Canada.
