UNIPORT CENTRES

CENTRE FOR HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT (CHD)

altalt

The Centre for Health and Development (CHD) evolved from nearly ten years of collaboration between faculty members from the University of Port Harcourt and the University of Toronto, Toronto, Canada. Initially conceived and identified as the Centre for Addiction and Mental Stress in the 2003-2013 University of Port Harcourt Strategic Plan, a need for a broader scope and stronger relevance to the university’s second, third and sixth strategic goals to build human capacity, internationalize joint research, and extend educational opportunity to communities brought about a name change.

CHD undertakes research and capacity building on a wide range of topics including bio-medical and social healthissues by involving experts and upcoming staff of the College of Health Sciences and other faculties in the University of Port Harcourt in collaboration with international partners. The centre is also a health information clearinghouse that offers technical support required to broaden the knowledge base and increase skills for provision of evidence-based quality health care in Rivers State and beyond.

The Centre for Health and Development was formally commissioned on 3rdFebruary 2008.
