UniPort Artsville Ends Workshop For Children

The University of Port Harcourt Art Gallery in partnership with the University of Port Harcourt Women Association has ended a three day Art Workshop Carnival and Exhibition for children. Declaring open the exhibition which was part of activities marking the 2021 International Children's Day celebration which held at the Seinye Lulu Briggs Children's Park, University Park, on Thursday, May 27, 2021, Wife of the Acting Vice Chancellor of the University, Dr Ezinneka Okodudu, commended the Arts Gallery for initiating entrepreneurial activities that would enable the children acquire useful skills that would be beneficial to them in the future. “By training these children we are building a positive future tomorrow. The skills they acquire today would enable them to stay away from social vices and become better citizens of our country,” she said. Representative of the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Professor Onyee Nwankpa, disclosed the Commission's desire to partner the Arts Gallery in subsequent edition of the Children's Day which is marked annually with activities aimed at promoting the wellbeing of children globally. “We are delighted to be associated with this event. We want to thank the organisers for honouring our children. Next year we promise to complement the event with a music concert,” Professor Nwankpa disclosed. In her address, the University Curator, Professor Bridget Nwanze, noted that the annual Art Workshop which had the theme “Expression 6,” provided an opportunity for the children to cultivate skills and artistic discoveries. “The Workshop introduced the children to the basic elements of art such as lines, shapes, colours and textures. They were encouraged to create meaning and verbalise their thoughts through arts,” Professor Nwanze pointed out, adding that the Workshop also afforded them a platform to unleash their creativity as well as build confidence. “By these the children experienced a connection between the shapes they drew and the physical world around them. They scribbled, scratched and splashed to explore and experiment with different tools as they discovered endless possibilities,” Professor Nwanze said, commending the Genesis Restaurant, the Nigerian Television Authority Port Harcourt, Dumo Lulu Briggs and the Junior Chamber International Trans Amadi for sponsoring the event.

Highpoint of the event which had a total of 168 children was award of prizes in different categories of arts and a sensitization talk on malnutrition and its prevention for under-five children organised by Save a Malnourished Foundation.
