Vice Chancellor Clocks One Year in Office

Professor Owunari Georgewill clocked one year in office on Wednesday, July 13, 2022, without staging any wasteful ceremony. Editor, SAM KPENU chronicles the performance of the Vice Chancellor in the last one year in office.

Professor Owunari Georgewill on July 13, 2022, clocked one year in the saddle of leadership as the 9th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt.

Recall that Professor Georgewill was appointed by the Governing Council on Friday, July 2, 2021, but took over the mantle of leadership on Tuesday, July 13, 2021, in accordance with the extant rules of the University.

There is no denying the fact, that the ascension of Professor Georgewill into the saddle of leadership as the VC has moved the University to online education strategies; tapping into the digital revolution and adopting new technologies to help students harness their full potential. The University has become a game-changer resulting in a shift from teacher-centric education to students-centric education.

Unarguably, Professor George is performing at the highest levels across all areas of the institution's mission. No doubt, his Vice Chancellorship has elevated the reputation of the University, and his contributions have been global in impact. Merely by taking office, he made history, he came fearless, strong, and determined, armed with programmes that would set transformational agenda for a competitive University of Port Harcourt. He is relentless in championing quality academic research, educational development, innovation, and the University's principal mission which is to contribute to a better world.

Professor Georgewill is a reformer who has introduced several reform programmes that have brought the University Management closer to staff, students, and stakeholders.

Under Georgewill's Vice Chancellorship, the University has made tremendous progress in the areas of academic, and international
collaborations with Universities in Africa and Europe as well as Canada and the United States of America and has also attracted government and international organisations in the infrastructure uplifting of the University.

Interestingly, the University is a construction ground for faculty buildings, hostel accommodation buildings, Professorial office buildings,
staff office buildings, classrooms, Lecture theatres, Lecture auditoriums, solar power for power supply, and academic excellence with
the participation of staff and students in local and international conferences workshops, seminars, and postgraduate training amongst others.

In an interview with UniPort News, Professor Georgewill disclosed that the journey so far has been very interesting and revealed that he would use every opportunity at his disposal to present the University to the national and international levels. He described himself as a servant leader who works along with staff, students and stakeholders to perform at optimally and develop the University. Congratulations to the Vice-Chancellor for these lofty and numerous achievements within one year.
