VC Reaffirms Commitment to Heads of Federal Establishment

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Owunari Georgewill has reaffirmed his commitment to identifying with the Federal Government Establishments in the State. The Vice-Chancellor disclosed this when he received the executives of the Association of Heads of Federal Government Establishments (AHFGE), Rivers State Chapter, on a familiarisation visit. The visit was held on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at the Vice Chancellor's Committee Room.

Receiving the delegation, the Vice Chancellor, expressed shock that the body what is meeting with the University for the first time. According to him, a Federal institution like University of Port Harcourt deserves to work hand in gloves with other Federal Agencies because according to him, such relationship will set the ball rolling for development-based deliberations.

“I want to thank you for this honour you have bestowed on the University. I must say, it is a good thing that we can now properly identify ourselves. I am confident that we will have many more deliberations and partnerships. I agree with you that Heads of parastatals should come together from time to time to discuss on the way forward, he said.

Professor Georgewill who promised to honour future invitations by the association, stated that although Principal Officers are not members of the body, but they should be accorded the same regard whenever they would represent him at their meetings.

Speaking shortly after the visit, the Chairman of the Association, Mr Eragbe Anthony told UniPort News that the visit was to formally inform the Vice Chancellor of the existence of the Association as well as seek partnerships where necessary. “The aim of this Association is for Heads of Department to unwind and familiarise. We are all children of the Federal Government from different parts of the country, so we want to be able to relate and know ourselves” he disclosed.

On her part, Secretary of the Association, Ifenyinwa James, said the Association craved for the full support and participation of the University of Port Harcourt.

Describing the relationship as cordial, Mrs James who is also the Field Officer Federal Department of Fisheries, added that with the over 160 organisations that make up the Association, members enjoy easy access thereby leading to more developmental discussions.

High-point of the event was the presentation of the certificate of membership alongside the reviewed constitution and by-laws of the Association to the Vice Chancellor.

Some of the agencies that make up the association are: Nigeria Immigration Service, Nigeria Customs Service, National Orientation Agency, Federal Inland Revenue Service, National Identity Management Commission, and National Human Rights Commission amongst others.
