Orazulike attracts collaborative grant to UNIPORT

Professor Ngozi C. Orazulike of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in the College of Medicine, University of Port Harcourt, has attracted a collaborative grant with a team of researchers from the University of Lagos, Nigeria. The team is led by Professor Bosede Afolabi of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the College of Medicine, University of Lagos as Chief Investigator. The research grant was awarded by the Washington-based Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

This important grant, better known as the IVON-PP Trial would enable the researchers to study the effectiveness and implementation outcomes of the use of intravenous iron for treating anaemia in women within hours of delivering their babies (postpartum period). The grant is to run from April 2022 to March 2025. This research if found effective, could improve the quality of life and prevent severe illness in women and their newborn. This will have a significant impact on the overall health of women, their families and the larger society.

It is important to state that this sizeable grant further goes to show the commitment of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to improvement of maternal and child health in resource-poor countries for which the foundation should be highly commended.

The research is being conducted in four states in Nigeria: Rivers, Kano, Kwara and Lagos; with Lagos as the coordinating centre. In Rivers State, the study team will work with representatives from five hospitals at the three levels of clinical care. These include; the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, the Rivers State Hospitals Management Board (RSHMB) - Bori, Ahoada and Okirika General Hospitals and the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board (RSPHCMB) – Orogbum Model Primary Health Care Centre, to achieve the stated purpose of the study.

The University of Port Harcourt under the auspices of the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Research and Development (DVC R & D), Professor Iyeopu S. Siminialayi is extremely pleased to partner with other experts in this unique research.

The Research team from Rivers State is led by Professor Ngozi C. Orazulike, a leading Obstetrician and Gynaecologist, with over fifteen years’ experience with special interests in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Infertility and Assisted-Conception, as well as Medical Education. Dr J. Alegbeleye, Dr O. Pius, Dr G. Iwo, Dr H. Awoye-Godspower and Dr B. Anaele, are other core members of the investigation team.
