THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT (Monday, 4th – Friday, 8th April, 2022)

1. The Tanzania High Commissioner, Chancery and Management of the University of Dar es Salaam recieved the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari A. Georgewill and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Prof. Clifford O. Ofurum who were in Tanzania on invitaion of the Vice-Cancellor of the University of Dar es Salaam for collaboration between the University of Port Harcourt, (Nigeria) and the University of Dar es Salaam, (Tanzania), and to further discuss and agree on strategies regarding the implementation of teaching Kiswahili at the University of Port Harcourt.  We are glad to report that we had fruitful deliberations and shall update the University of Port Harcourt when we commence full implementation. 

We also felicitated with the Ambassador of Nigeria to Tanzania Dr. Hamisu Takalmawa at the Nigeria Embassy, Haile Selassie Road Oysterbay Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania.

2. In response to the letter of request by the Vice-Chancellor on construction of a pedestrian bridge at Choba junction east/west road, we received Engr. Bassey Ibiang and a team of Engineers from the Federal Ministry of Works, Abuja FCT who were in the University to assess the location and suitability for the project.

3. The Deputy Vice-Chancellor, (Academic) Prof. Kingsley Owete represented the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. O.A. Georgewill at the award ceremony for the endowment of Professorial Chair in the University of Port Harcourt. The ceremony was held at the Nigerian Communications Commission Conference Room, Maitama, Abuja.

4. We are glad to inform the University Community that the Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the establishment of the British Nigeria University under the supervision of the University of Port Harcourt. 

5. Following the expiration of the tenure of Prof. Emmanuel Emesealu, the University Management on Friday 8th April, 2022, appointed Prof. Chima B. Onuoha of the Department of Management as the new Director of the University of Port Harcourt Press Limited (UPPL).

While we await a fovourable outcome of the industrial action from the various unions of  federal universities, we encourage us all to stay strong and be optimistic.
