THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT (Wednesday, 13th – Friday, 22nd July, 2022)

*RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT*.

 

_Wednesday, 13th – Friday, 22nd July, 2022_ 

 

We are glad to report the following events that occurred during the period under review:

1. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari A. Georgewill represented the University at the Association of African Universities (AAU) Summit which held at Accra, Ghana from 12th to 15th July, 2022. The programme which drew delegates across West Africa was organized by AAU for developing 5years strategic plan – 2022 to 2027 for the African Universities.

2. Similarly, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Clifford O. Ofurum was at the Tanzania High Commission, Abuja –FCT to participate in the World Kiswahili Language Day Celebration. You would recall that we had held some meetings on Inter-University Collaboration with the University of Dar es Salaam to teach Kiswahili at the University of Port Harcourt. Our participation in this event was to show our acceptance and further strengthen mutual relationship between both universities 

3. We took part in the commissioning of Prof. Cyril Nwanna Nzewunwa Memorial Library, Port Harcourt. 

The event which held at the National Museum premises featured creative art works and participants from within and outside Rivers State.

4. We participated in the 2022 National Universities Commission (NUC) Retreat. The retreat afforded NUC Management the opportuinity to engage Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities on various issues bothering on the Nigerian educational system in line with emerging trends and global best practices for improved delivery of quality education.

5. Sequel to the invitation by the Minister of Education, the Vice-Chancellor, Registrar, and the Admissions Officer attended the 2022 Policy meeting on Admissions into Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria on Thursday, 21st July, 2022, at the International Conference Centre, Central Business District, Abuja FCT, to discuss issues on Admissions into institutions of Higher Learning.

6. We received some officials from the Nigeria Information & Telecommunications Development Agency (NITDA) who were in the University to make findings on a suitable site for the construction of a robotic library for the Centre for Information & Telecommunication Engineering (CITE). We took them round some available spaces and we are hopeful that the project would commence soon.

7. The Management of the University held a meeting with Excos and members of Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) Uniport Branch, to make clarifications on the disparities on the payment of the outstanding National Minimum Wage Arrears. We would like to reiterate that such payment are made directly from IPPIS Platform. We shall however, get in touch with IPPIS officials to resolve the disparities.

8. We participated in the 12th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the National Association of Microfinance Banks (NAMB). The AGM which drew Board Chairmen of Microfinance Banks across the nation, took place at WDC, Tafawa Belewa Way, Central District, Abuja, was focused on "Managing Post Recapitalization Opportunities & Risks in Microfinance Banks". 

9. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari A. Georgewill was honored and certified as a distinguished West Africa Society of Pharmacology (WASP-SOAP) Fellow for Life Membership Status. 

He was honored along other Fellows at Transcorp Hilton Hotel Abuja under the distinguished chairmanship of the former President of Nigeria - Dr. Goodluck E. Johnathan GCFR.

10. We conducted orientation for new doctoral students in the centre of oilfield chemicals research (ACE CEFOR). We admonished them to take utilize the rich learning resources made available to them to ensure they excel in their studies and become industrial compliant on graduation.

While we are hopeful of a quick resolution between the federal government and various unions, we urge us to pray for the nation and get involved in activities that would further develop our minds.
