*THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT*

_Monday, 4th – Friday, 8th July, 2022_

We are glad to report the following events that occurred during the week under review:

1. The immediate past Dean, Faculty of Education, and the Provost, College of Health Sciences paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owuanri A. Georgewill to congratulate him on his One-Year in Office. We also received felicitations from several members of staff, students and stakeholders of this great University. This Administration is deeply grateful for all the show of affection and concern. We are under an obligation to take the University to an enviable height in the global Education System. We give all glory to God for His mercies thus far and pray for more grace in this second year. 

2. The Vice-Chancellor was conferred with Personality Award by the TIME AFRICA MAGAZINE.  This is in recognition of his impactful performance across various areas of academic, human Capital development and infrastructural expansion in the University. The VC was also applauded for attracting foreign grants and opportunities to the University and for bringing staff, students and stakeholders close to the Management by weekly reporting of events as they occurred in the University. 

3. The Dean, Faculty of Science, and Dean, Faculty of Computing presented overall winners of the 2021 – 2022 Huawei ICT Competition in Sub- Saharan Africa. We are glad to inform the University that these winners are students from the Faculties of Science and Computing 

4. We received updates from the AFRICA CENTRES OF EXCELLENCE (ACEs) Centre Leaders, Directors, Centre for Information Telecommunication Engineering (CITE), Centre for Occupational Health Safety & Environment (COHSE) and  the Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS). We commended them for inputs and charged them to go all-out in achieving the ideals of this unique Institution.

5. We attended a meeting with the Executive Secretary, Tertiary Education Trust Fund  (TETFund) in  Abuja FCT and discussed the way forward on TETFund intervention projects (ongoing and abandoned projects). We are glad to report that our request is receiving attention 

6.  We met with the Executive Council Members of the various unions in the University to intimate them with the issues bothering on Minimum Wage Arrears Payment. The Bursar explained explicitly to the Excos that the overpayment of the minimum wage arears would be deducted from the salaries of staff who were overpaid.

7. We received a representative of the Shell Petroleum Development Corporation (SPDC), Lagos. We had fruitful discussion on areas of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). We are pleased to inform the University of the readiness of Shell to support a more efficient electrical power supply to the University. 

8. Similarly, we received Dr. Tonye G. Okio, Honourable Commissioner representing Bayelsa State at the Federal Character Commission and had fruitful discussions on areas of mutual interest. 

9. The 1983 MBBS set(classmates of the Vice Chancellor) of the University of Port Harcourt has commenced the rehabilitation of the second gate of the University Park. We commend the class for this kind gesture for their alma-mata

10. We visited the University of Port Harcourt Mosque to felicitate with the Muslim Community on the occasion of their Sallah Celebration. We wished them best of the event and urged them to pray for the peace and prosperity of the Nation.

11. We met with the Management of Conoil on campus to discuss issues of security on campus as it concerns their operations

As the unions continue to dialogue with the Federal Government  on the current industrial action, we pray for speedy resolution of the issues and therefore encourage us all to remain hopeful.
