RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT ( Tuesday 14th – Friday, 24th June, 2022)

*RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT*.

_Tuesday 14 – Friday, 24th June, 2022_

We are glad to report the following events that took place in the University from Tuesday 14th – Friday 24th June, 2022:

1. We attended the Strategic Meeting for Strengthening African Centres of Excellence for Rapid Delivery of Developmental Projects and Research. The event which held in Palaise De Congress, Benin Republic was quite beneficial to the University and we hope to implement decisions reached (at the meeting) as soon as possible.

2. We received kind donations of massive equipment such as laptops, projectors, electronic communication/interactive smart board sand furniture by MacArthur Foundation and have handed over the items to the Faculty of Media & Communication Studies. We are pleased to inform the University Community that these items are benefits from some International Meetings embarked upon by the Vice-Chancellor for the common good of the University. 

3. The University received commendations by her Alumni Association published in the Independent National Newspaper as “Outstanding in Modern University Administration, Setting a New Pace in the Running of Tertiary Educational Institutions”. This was contained in a statement issued by the National President of the UNIPORT Alumni Association, Williams Glad Ule, on Thursday, 16th June, 2022. We are grateful to God Almighty for all His benevolence to our University, we also appreciate our staff, students and other stakeholders as we see this as a collective effort and encourage us all to put in our best at every given opportunity.

4. The University Management paid a condolence visit to the family of late Prof. E. Akama to sympathize with his immediate and extended family over the loss.

5. Similarly, the Historians of Education Development Society of Nigeria (HOEDSON), an affiliate of International Conference for History of Education, paid a condolence visit to the University to commiserate with us over the demise of Prof. Okorosaye Orubite of the Faculty of Education who until his death was the President of their Association. 

6. Prof. Nenibarini Zabbey of the Department of Fisheries, Faculty of Agriculture received the 2022 RUTH PATRICK AWARD. The award which was given in recognition of his outstanding research work in the application of Basic Aquatic Science Principles to Important Problems with a lead paper titled “Limnology Drive Environmental Justice- A Case Study of Bodo”. We are glad to report that Dr. Zabbey is the first African to be so honoured. 

7. We inspected:

a. On-going construction for Faculty of Allied Health Sciences Building 

b. On-going construction of the new Convocation Arena

c. On-going construction of ultra-modern students’ hostel, courtesy of the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC)

d. On-going construction of students’ hostel 1 & 2 by TETFund project

e. On-going construction of Professorial offices and Lecture Theatre – NEEDS Intervention project

f. On-going construction of the Faculty of Social Science Building (Phase II)

g. Ground breaking/commencement of construction for Faculty of Basic Clinical Science Building – NEEDs Intervention project.

g. In response to request for more INEC registration Centres, we got in touch with INEC and a new centre for voters registration is now open at the Senior Staff Club of the University. We encourage all staff and students to get themselves registered.

While we await a fruitful outcome of the industrial action embarked upon by various unions of federal universities, we encourage all to remain strong and pray for the nation.
