THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT

Monday, 6th – Friday, 10th June, 2022

The following events took place in the University during the week:

1. We received a delegation from SPIE, who came in for facility tour on our campuses in readiness to partner with us on students internship

2. Cisco Catalyst equipment were donated to the University by Interswitch Group Limited. The donation is to aid our students in the Faculty of Engineering to learn Internet/Communication networking programmes. We hope to install the equipment immediately after the industrial action of the unions is called off.

3. We participated in the mid/downstream Oil & Gas Symposium on “Implementation of Standard Organization of Nigeria September 02, 2017 Approved Petroleum Standards”. The programme was jointly organized by the Centre for Gas Refining & Petrochemical Engineering (CGRP) and the African Centre for Excellence in Oilfield Research both of the University of Port Harcourt.

4. Principal Officers Meeting was held on Wednesday, 8th June, 2022, to deliberate and take decision on issues of concerns to the University.

5. We must indeed commend our staff for their continuous improvement in capacity building and giant strides in the larger society. Once again, it is my pleasure to inform the University Community that Dr. Bisola Onajin-Obembe of the Department of Anaesthesiology, Faculty of Clinical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, University of Port Harcourt has emerged as Ondo State Female Role Model Award Winner for 2022. This award is in recognition of her contribution in anaesthesia workforce development. We are proud of her achievement. We know this would also increase our visibility.

6. We participated in the World Environment Day and World Oceans Day Symposium with the theme *"Only One Earth: Collective Action for Sustainability"*. The programme which was organized by Cape Peninsula University of Technology was held online.

We are glad to report that our own Prof. Chikere Blaise anchored a session on Nature-Based Strategies for Eco-Restoration of Oil-Impacted Soils in compliance with UN SDGs. We would like to use this medium to call on all and sundry to be environmental friendly.

As Government and the Unions continue to dialogue on the issues surrounding the current industrial action, we pray for speedy resolution. We therefore encourage us all to remain hopeful.

Thank you.
