THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT (Monday 16th – Friday 20th May, 2022)

1. We participated in the meeting of Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigeria Universities. Issues affecting the Nigerian University system were extensively discussed. The Committee also deliberated on possible areas of collaboration in terms of Research, Joint Degrees, Staff/Student Exchange Programmes with representatives of UK universities.

2. We held discussions with Friends of the University from New York, USA on revitalization of the University Printing Press.

3. We carried out inspection on the completed/certification of the refurbished Faculty of Education Auditorium

4. We played host to Jennifer Foltz, the Assistant Public Affairs Officer, United States Consulate, Lagos and her team. We had robust discussions on the opening of the American Space/Corner at the Donald Ekong Library and accessibility of the U.S e-library. 

5. In company of the Board Chairman, UDPS, we paid an inspection visit on the newly renovated classrooms and undertook a tour on the school's facilities.

6. The Assistant Director/Area Manager of Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Mr. Gabriel Angereke in company of his team paid a working visit on the Vice Chancellor. The visit afforded the ITF and the University the opportunity to discuss on issues affecting both parties and the need to strengthen the existing partnership.

7. The appointment of Prof. Nath Abraham as the Director of the College of Continuing Education was renewed for another term. His reappointment is sequel to the creditable discharge of his duties at the College.

8. In our avowed quest to ensure the smooth running of the University, we appointed HoDs and Ag. HoDs into various departments whose HoDs and Ag. HoDs had served out their tenures.

9. We have submitted documents to the NUC in support of our position on reversing the denied status of the Department of Pure and Industrial Chemistry. We are hopeful of a favourable response.

10. We are pleased to announce that Professor Nenibarini Zabby of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Port Harcourt in faraway Grand Rapids Michigan USA, was honoured with the 2022 Ruth Patrick Award for Research. This feat is in recognition of his outstanding achievements in Research. The University is proud of this achievement and will continue to celebrate excellence of staff and students whenever achieved.

11. We held a meeting of Principal Officers with the Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Etela, the former Dean, Faculty of Agriculture and the President of ASUU cooperative, Prof. Monanu to resolve some lingering issues between the parties.

12. We paid an inspection visit on the construction site for the commencement of the Faculty building of Allied Medical Sciences.

13. We received furniture and other supplies for the faculty of Allied Health Sciences.

14. We received the supply of a 32 seater brand new Toyota bus for use by ACE-CEFOR 

15. We also inspected the supply of medical items/equipments at the Sports Institute.

 

While we await a favourable outcome of the industrial action embarked upon by the various unions of federal universities, we encourage us all to stay strong.
