*THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT*

 

Monday 22nd – Friday 26th August, 2022

 

1. The University of Port Harcourt improved on the Webometric ranking of Nigerian Universities by rating as 5th best University in Nigeria. We are very much grateful to God and also wish to use this medium to express our sincere appreciation to our Management Team, Staff, Stakeholders and the National Universities Commission for efforts in academic, moral and technological visibility of our Institution. 

2) We had cordial discussions on areas of mutual benefits at the meeting of University Principal Officers with Globacom Nigeria Limited.

3) We also held a meeting with the Directors of School of General Studies and University Printing Press on issues of operation and service delivery.

4) We attended the retirement thanksgiving service of Professor Augustine Nwinee Gbosi of the Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences. We felicitated with him and wished him good life and health.

5) We visited the Centre for Information and Telecommunication Engineering (CITE) to officially kick start the 2022 Children ICT Holiday Training on "Coding and Robotics".

6) We received a team led by a US-based Nigerian, Mr. Patrick U. Anyawoke on possible areas of investment in the University.

7) We received Uniport Sports Management Board, ably led by Emeritus Professor Nimi Briggs in company of Professor Mark Anikpo and others and had fruitful discussions for improved sporting activities. 

8) Principal Officers, and members from the  Faculty of Agriculture had a meeting with representatives of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Polaris Bank on Tertiary Institution Poultry Revival Scheme aimed at boosting local production/processing of Poultry in our University.

9) A new Principal was appointed for the University Demonstration Secondary School. The appointment of Mrs. Ajie A. Ndoma takes immediate effect.

10) We hosted an exit meeting with the Finance team from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND) ably led by Dr. Mrs. Gloria Alotu, Director, Finance and Investment, TETFUND. We are glad to inform the University that they were impressed with the quality of work being carried out in our Institution.

11) We inspected the following projects:

a) Virtual equipment donated by a Federal House of Representatives Member, Rt. Hon. Gogo Bright, to the Centre of Peace and Security Studies

b) Ongoing capital projects construction at the Faculty of Social Sciences extension.

c) Renovation of the official residence of the Registrar

d) Ongoing NEEDS Assessment project, Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences 

e) Ongoing NEEDS Assessment project, Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences

f) Ongoing NEEDS Assessment project, Faculty of Computing

g)Ongoing NEEDS Assessment project, construction of professorial offices and auditorium

12. We are were presented with an award

*Icon  of University Administration*  by Rotary Club, Choba Branch. In recognition of our contribution to Education and  pattern  of Leadership.

13. We completely blocked the unused exit point of the University - Aluu/UDSS Road. This was in a bid to secure the University property. 

 

We are pleased to welcome SSANU, NASU and NAAT members back to work while awaiting a favourable negotiation between the Federal Government and Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
