THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT (Monday, 13th – Friday, 17th February, 2023)

*THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT*

_The following events took place in the University from Monday, 13th - Friday 17th February, 2023_.

1. In quick response to the letter from National Universities Commission directing Universities to shut down within the period of election (22nd February – 14th March, 2023) the University Senate met and considered the request by the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission and approved the shutdown of the University between February 22 and March 14, 2023.

2. The University Management undertook a sensitization visit to halls of residence to inform the students  of the shutdown of the University as approved by the Senate of the University.

3. We received a Team from the Department of Budget and Planning, Ministry of Education who were on ground to inspect capital project performance and management audit of the University.

4. We attended the send-forth ceremony organized by the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Health Sciences in honour of Professor Blessing C. Didia on the occasion of his statutory retirement from the services of the University of Port Harcourt.

5. We held a meeting with the University Audit Committee to assess and improve on our internal control mechanisms

6. The National and International Partners on the European Union (EU) Erasmus project  paid a courtesy visit on the Vice Chancellor. The project is based on Artificial Intelligence and embedding Technology. The team was led by Dr Daniel of the University of Siegen Germany. The Director of CITE, Professor Burdillion Omijeh is the national Cordinator of the project.

7. In recognition of our giant strides and the 4th position attained in the recently released webometrics ranking, we received a commendation note from our strategic partner, Dr. Richard Nyong, the CEO of Lekki Gardens 

8. The Ministry of Communication and Digital Economy through the Hon Minister, Prof. Isa Ibrahim Pantami has begun delivery of digital equipment ranging from 380 watts solar panels, CAT 6 30 S meters, hybrid inverters among others to increase the broadband infrastructure in our University

9. We declared open the one day workshop on Biodiversity Genomics Advances in West Africa. The University of Port Harcourt played host to the maiden hybrid workshop. The Regional Centre for Biotechnology and Bioresources Centre of the University, NABDQ, SSZCoE, ACE-CEFOR, KNUST, UA-C and CUN are partners  in the project.

10. At the 26th Valedictory Lecture of the University, the Valedictorian, Prof. Onwuchekwa, delivering his lecture titled "Working towards a healthy brain" outlined his contributions, innovations and research breakthroughs in the field of Neurology.

11. In our bid to ensure standard in research and quality of our graduates, we were at the Graduate School Seminar Defence  Presentation by post graduate students. We were impressed at the academic show of the soon to be higher degree holders. 

12. Similarly, we participated in the external defence of the Ph.D students of the department of Management and we are pleased with the academic performances seen.

13. We received an emergency call of  fire incursion to the Regional Bioresouces Centre, towards the main gate of the University. We are glad to report that we immediately contained the spread and put out the fire.

14. We received the following groups in courtesy 
- Unique Choba Amiable Cooperatives Investment and Credit Society.
- Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) Uniport branch.
- Nigerian Universities Pensioners Association (NUPA) Uniport branch.
We had fruitful discussions with them all.

15. You would recall that we recently wrote to the Executive Secretary, TETFund, seeking approval to use office equipment and furniture supplied to the University by TETFund which were stocked for about 8 years. We are pleased to inform the University Community that with the approval of the Executive Secretary, we have begun distribution of the items.
