THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT ( Monday 24th – Friday 28th July, 2023 )

THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT

The following events took place in the University from Monday, 24th - Friday, 28th July, 2023.

1. We received in courtesy top management staff of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH). The high powered visit which was led by the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Henry Ugboma afforded us the opportunity to engage on critical areas of collaboration.

2. As part of the requirements to run new academic programmes, we received the report of National Universities Commission (NUC) resource assessment visit granting approval for the commencement of the following degree awarding programmes with effect from 2023/2024 academic session. The newly approved programmes are:

* B.Sc. Agricultural Extension and Development Studies

* B.Sc. Cyber Security

* BMLS. Medical Laboratory Science 

* B.Sc. Agribusiness Management

* B.Sc. Broadcasting

* B.Sc. Information Technology

* B.Sc. Journalism and Media Studies 

* B.Sc. Film Production

* Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.)

With the above approval, candidates can effect a change of course to University of Port Harcourt to be admitted into any of the above listed departments. 

3. We held a series of meetings with Directors of Centres/Institutes on a wide range of issues bordering on security and award of degrees by Centres/Institutes.

4. We received the National President of the University of Port Harcourt Alumni Association, Dr. Ule Glad Williams and the Abuja Chapter President and had very robust discussions on the activities of the Association. A proposal targeted towards Alumni contributions to the University was presented to the Management of the University.

5. We attended the 2023 Graduation and Prize-giving Ceremony of the University of Port Harcourt Demonstration Primary School (UDPS). We were thrilled at the academic excellence of the pupils and commended the school Board, staff, parents/guardians for their laudable contributions.

6. As critical stakeholders in the University, we held a strategic meeting with the Executives of the Student Union led by her President and other students representatives to discuss some issues of concerns.

7. The Dean, Faculty of Agriculture, Professor Ibisimie Etela, in company of some Heads of Department and members of staff in the newly approved departments, paid a "thank you" visit to the University Management.

We are glad to report that the University Management is working assiduously to ensure adequate human and material resources for a smooth take off of the newly approved programmes.

8. In recognition of our meritorious service to the University in the last two years, we received an Award of Excellence from the NLNG Centre for Gas, Refining and Petrochemicals.

9. We inspected examination halls where students are currently sitting for their first semester examination to access the level of compliance to examination rules. We were impressed with the conduct of both staff and students.

10. The newly appointed Board Chairman of the College of Continuing Education (CCE), Prof Bridget Nwanze undertook a tour of the College facilities in company of the Management Staff of the College. We are optimistic of a mutual work relationship in the interest of the College.

11. In our desire to constructively engage with stakeholders in the University, we met with the Chairman and other executive members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Uniport Chapter and issues affecting the University and the Union were discussed.

12. As part of preparations for her forthcoming National Conference to be hosted at the University of Port Harcourt, we received the Chairman and members of the National Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Rivers State chapter who paid a courtesy call on the University. The University Management assured the Association of her cooperation in ensuring the seamless hosting of the National Conference.

13. Similarly, we received the National Secretary and members of the Local Organizing Committee of the Nigerian Biological Safety Association who were on a courtesy visit to the University in preparation for the hosting of her annual conference/workshop in the University. We commended the Association for making Uniport a destination choice and pledged our support to ensuring a seamless conference.

14. As a way of increasing internally generated revenue and making the University more entrepreneurial, we commissioned the newly equipped University of Port Harcourt Bakery and Restaurant. The bakery which now produces the Uniport bread is managed by the Department of Hospitality Tourism and Management in partnership with Teemas Catering Services. The facility houses an environment and cost friendly restaurant for staff, students and visitors. 

15. We received the organizers of Desgol Entertainment World to discuss issues of collaboration with the University to host the International Film Festival. The discussions were fruitful.

16. We also received the Executive Council and members of the Rivers State Legislative Forum. We encouraged them to develop means of ensuring harmonious relationships between the Executive, Legislative and Judicial arm of the Students Union as this would foster development for the students union across universities.

17. The newly elected Dean, Prof. Nna Johnson, Heads of Department and senior officers of Faculty of Social Sciences paid a visit to the University Management to congratulate the Team for a successful two years in office. 

At the meeting, Prof. Ezaal Okowa was commended for her kind gesture of carrying a baby of one of the students writing her examination. 

18. The Executive Council of the Senior Staff Club paid a courtesy visit on the University Management and we had fruitful discussions on how to improve the staff club.
