PRE-DEGREE/CERTIFICATE REGISTRATION/SCHOOL FEES

THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT ( Monday 7th – Friday 11th August, 2023 )

_The following events took place in the University from Monday, 7th - Friday, 11th August, 2023_.

1. At the Emergency Meeting of the University of Port Harcourt, Senate re-elected the following Professors as Deputy Vice-Chancellors: 
* Prof. Clifford Ofurum - Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration);
* Prof. Kingsley Owete - Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics); and 
* Prof. Iyeopu Siminialayi - Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development).
We wish them a successful second tenure 

2. As we intentionally forge partnerships to advance quality training we received the donation of ICT laboratory equipment from the ICT giants HUAWEI. University also became HUAWEI ICT Academy Support Center (IASC).

3. The Institute of Educational Leadership Practitioners of Nigeria held her 2023 International Conference at the University. We urged the Institute to use the conference to make far reaching policies to enrich educational leadership in Nigeria. As part of her activities, the Institute conferred on us an Award as Fellow, Institute of Educational Leadership Practitioners of Nigeria and excellence in leadership 

4. The University of Port Harcourt is noted for it’s prowess in sports. We received a delegation from the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) who were on an inspection visit to the university's world class sports complex. The University of Port Harcourt has been selected as a Training centre in Africa for regional National Olympic committees. UniPort will now provide training to athletes from west Africa and the whole of Africa.

5. As universities in Nigeria prepare to fully transit to digital information system, we received and reviewed the report on the College  data/ information management system that will enable the University develop a comprehensive and effective information management system. 

6. We received in audience, the Head of Department, Fine Arts and Design, in company of other senior members of staff from the Department in preparation for the hosting of Prof. Tayo Hartman of the Michigan State University. The visit will be marked by the signing of a partnership for the Exchange and Linkage Programme for staff and students between both Institutions.

7. We inaugurated the University of Port Harcourt Wide Strategic Research Committee to chart a robust and well-structured research system that is centrally coordinated. The Committee is headed by Professor Chukwudi Onyeaso.

8. As we pride in the excellence of staff and students, we received the cheering news of the feat achieved by Dr. Clara Ifeanyi-Obi of the Faculty of Agriculture as she emerged the second best at the 2023 African Evidence Leadership AWARD (AELA). The award recognizes individuals with clear and enduring leadership in the field of Evidence Informed Decision Making (EIDM) in Africa. 

9. We celebrate two outstanding Alumni of the University. They are:
-  Kenneth Igwe, the Manager, ICT Talent Ecosystem, HAUWEI who facilitated the partnership between the University and HAUWEI culminating in the University been selected as HAUWEI Academy Support Center
- Chimuanya Mbereke, a graduate of the Hospital and Tourism Department of the University who currently works as the Front Desk Officer, Abuja Continental Hotel, formerly Sheraton Hotel. 

10. The Uniport U96 Political and Administrative Studies Alumni as part of their homecoming activities paid a courtesy visit on the University Management. The group made donations to the development of their alma mater. We encourage other alumni to either individually or collectively key into such laudable initiative.

11. We undertook the inspection of the face-lift of the following:
a.  Senate building
b. Faculty of Clinical Sciences
We also inspected the completed construction of the Faculty of Basic Clinical Sciences as part of Federal Government Intervention (NEEDS ASSESSMENT) to improve higher education.

12.  As a token of appreciation and recognition of our student friendly policies, we received a portrait art work from Prince-Goodluck Ezeakor, a 400 level undergraduate student of Electrical Engineering.  

13. The School of Science Laboratory Technology organized a Career Fair initiated by an alumnus of the School, Mr. Diamond Oghenekaro, Managing Director, Testloh Energy Services. The Fair, was to give back to the University through sponsorship of the project work of some students.

14. We are happy to inform the University community that the new convocation arena being constructed by the Rivers State Government has reached final stages of completion as installation of facilities in the interior has progressed tremendously. We commend the Rivers State Government while we await the completion and handover of the new convocation arena that will be second to none in Nigeria
