THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT

*THIS WEEK IN RETROSPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY OF PORT HARCOURT*.
_Monday 15th to Friday, 19th November, 2021_
 
1.  We concluded an exciting workshop at Cambridge on University Governance, Research funding, Students Administration, Quality assurance and University business models.
 
2. We participated in the 3rd Biennial South-South Regional Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction, Professional Certification/Induction & DRM Icon Leadership Awards.  The Conference which was aimed at brainstorming on ways to contain and reduce disaster risk, mitigate the impacts of disaster among our people and improve humanitarian actions in the region. The Conference was well attended.
 
3. We hosted the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day 2021, organized by the Centre of Disaster Risk and Development Studies and Centre for Marine Pollution Monitoring and Sea Food Safety. The programme expounded  the importance of the subject of Geography and provided a global forum for users of GIS technology in our society.
 
4. We met with the Director, Information and Communication Technology and discussions were held on how best to increase the University’s website feasibility to staff, students and the general public.
 
5. The Committee of Provost and Deans (CPD) met to discuss and facilitate the resumption of the newly admitted Year 1 students and other matters.
 
6. We met with campus residents and business owners to consider the electricity metering of staff quarters and business outlets in the University. We wish to inform members of the University community that we reached a consensus for the installation and the use of prepaid meters on campus.
 
7. The Royal Society of Chemistry in partnership with the University of Port Harcourt, organized a one-day hybrid workshop for Researchers and Graduate Students on “Understanding Publication Process in High Impact Journals”. The workshop was successful and issues around writing and publishing on international journals were demystified.
 
8. Senate Committee on Academic Policy and Planning (SCAPP) met on Wednesday 17th November, 2021 to consider and recommend to Senate new degree awarding programmes.
 
9. The University Management held an interactive session with all Junior Staff where issues relating to work ethics, record keeping and opportunities available to their growth were discussed. The University Management noted the concerns raised and will look into them accordingly.
